For many people receiving palliative care, there is no place more important than home.
The primary aim of Peninsula Home Hospice’s Unassigned Bed Fund (UBF) is to fund the hire of equipment that allows palliative care clients to remain at home enhancing quality of life. Without this support, many clients may require admission to hospital or another inpatient setting to receive the care and equipment they need.
The fund provides practical solutions at critical moments in a person’s illness journey. Most commonly, it supports the hire of hospital beds, pressure-relieving air mattresses, mobility aids and other specialised equipment that enables safe, high-quality care to be delivered in the home environment.
When a client’s condition deteriorates and they become increasingly frail or bed-bound, access to a hospital bed can be essential. It improves comfort, supports symptom management and allows clinicians, family members and carers to provide care safely and effectively. Pressure-relieving mattresses also help prevent skin breakdown and other complications that can occur during prolonged periods in bed.
The Unassigned Bed Fund is also used to support equipment such as walking frames and recliner chairs, helping clients maintain independence, mobility and quality of life for as long as possible.
Importantly, the fund helps remove financial barriers that may prevent people from accessing the equipment they need. It ensures that a person’s ability to remain at home is determined by their wishes and clinical needs—not by their financial circumstances.
Every item funded through the Unassigned Bed Fund has a simple but powerful purpose: to help people remain in the place they call home, surrounded by the people and comforts that matter most, while receiving the high-quality palliative care they deserve.
By enabling choice, preserving dignity and supporting families and carers, the Unassigned Bed Fund continues to make a profound difference to the lives of Peninsula Home Hospice clients every day.
